DuraMais – MAIZE CROPS: LIMIT RUNOFF, EROSION AND PPP TRANSFER TO THE WATER SYSTEM THROUGH INNOVATIVE SOIL PREPARATION
Project Overview
Maize crops: limiting runoff, erosion and the transfer of PPPs to the river system through innovative soil preparation
Project Results
A pilot project carried out between 2012 and 2017 in Wallonia has led to the development of a specific erosion control technique for maize crops. This technique leads to the creation of mounds and hollows between the rows of the crop. During major storms, water is stored in cavities, which prevents runoff and the onset of erosion. Storing water on the whole plot also allows the crop to make better use of it. Demonstration plots will be set up in order to convince the agricultural world of the interest of adopting more sustainable practices.
Thanks to some documents available on the internet, it is possible to see that the results of DuraMaïs are mainly based on the communication of new tillage methods and the production of communication materials to show the advantages of this technique (https://www.sillonbelge.be/art/d-20190529-3U6T0K, http://www.pnr-scarpe-escaut.fr/sites/default/files/documents/pgm_autonomie_fourragere_2esemweb.pdf)
