WATERinCORE – Sustainable Water Management through Common Responsibility enhancement in Mediterranean River Basins
Project Overview
Due to growing demand, irrational management and climate change, water is a major pressure factor. In the Mediterranean, where disparities geo-socio-economic exist but where the climate is uniform, these issues require a comprehensive management to ensure balanced development and sustainable water management. In general, in the MED countries, management does not take into account the fundamental requirements of sustainable development (Agenda 21) such as the cross-sectoral approach and public participation. The main objective of WATERinCORE was therefore to develop, implement and disseminate a methodology for integrating Agenda 21 into the water management policy.
Project Results
During the 36 months of the project, WATERinCORE partners identified the practices and policies of water management and reviewed the implementation of the Agenda at the local level in the four participating countries.
Taking into account these findings and the unique characteristics of each participating region, a public participation process was designed and implemented in five pilot river basins to engage key stakeholders / stakeholders in an active contribution to the development of the pilot area. a water management action plan while ensuring that their needs have been taken into account.
The public participation process has mainly resulted in the establishment of action plans for each pilot basin and a social agreement between the stakeholders and the competent authorities for the implementation and follow-up of the proposed action plan for the project. ‘to come up. In its action plans, WATERinCORE has incorporated measures against natural hazards such as floods, fires and droughts, as well as suggestions for the exploitation of water as a renewable energy source contributing to the reducing greenhouse gases and mitigating the effects of climate change. In addition, a follow-up plan to ensure the proper implementation of the water management plan and the continuation of the public participation procedure was proposed.
