CARISMA – Coordination and Assessment of Research and Innovation in Support of Climate Mitigation Actions
Project Overview
The CARISMA project has two overall objectives. First, through effective stakeholder consultation and communication leading to improved coordination and assessment of climate change mitigation options, it aims to benefit research and innovation efficiency as well as international cooperation on research and innovation and technology transfer. Second, it seeks to assess policy and governance questions that shape the prospects of climate change mitigation options, and discuss the results with representatives from the CARISMA target audiences to incorporate what can be learned for the benefit of climate change mitigation. The target audiences include national and local policymakers, innovation and strategy managers in business and industry, research funding organisations and the research community.
Project Results
– Screening of conducted research, development and innovation (RD&I) projects funded by the EC to commit to the target of Members’ emissions cut by 2050. The OUtput is an online database including FP6, FP7 and Horizon 2020 RD&I projects on mitigation.
– Reports including analysis of some technologies needed that enable deep decarbonisation in multiple sectors, in particular hydrogen (in the steel industry and transport), energy storage, carbon dioxide capture and storage, heating, cooling and more efficient envelopes for buildings, biofuels for aviation, and improved fertiliser use and livestock management (agriculture). The analysis focuses on their technological readiness level (TRL), life-cycle assessment, economic costs and benefits, environmental and social barriers and enablers, once they would be mature enough for increased market uptake and diffusion. Available funding streams are also considered.
