Project Overview

The first objective of the CaseXtreme project is to identify an appropriate measure for the statistical significance of changes in the frequencies of extremes (SSCSE) in order to provide the baseline for the design of innovative financial products and risk management tools.

The following objectives of the CaseXtreme project are, on the one hand, to train a new climate services scientist who can operate between different actors and professionals: academia, SMEs, users, providers and actors active in climate services.

Project Results

The project aims to create estimation tools to anticipate the developments needed to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. These tools are both financial and practical in terms of setting up infrastructure to help countries manage the risk of extreme events and adapt to climate change. The project is therefore based on the variability of extremes and the need to anticipate them. To this end, a new methodology has been developed to distinguish systematic changes in the frequency of extremes from natural fluctuations in the climate system. A payment system for an insurance product based on such a methodology has been defined. In addition, its financial viability has been assessed over Africa for different scenarios of greenhouse gas concentrations by exploiting the results of several climate models collected during the 5th coupled model intercomparison project.
