Project Overview

It focuses on innovative food entrepreneurs working on the reduction of food losses in the ‘neglected’ first parts of the food chain. This project kicks food losses out of Europe in 3 food sectors (fish, meat and fruit & vegetables). The aim will be to prevent food being produced for human consumption to degradate in the food waste pyramid to a lower value level.

Project Results

Fruits & vegetables: few reliable data exist; 88M tons EU food waste (FUSIONS) of which 50% by NWE countries (Eurostat); fruits & vegs 17% of total food waste in UK (WRAP); baseline: 7.4M tons waste in NWE (2012). Fish waste in Ireland 1,810 tons from filleting white fish (BIM/IFA 2014); 230,000 tons fish waste from discards in FR; 70,000 tons in Brittany of which 46% white fish (2012). Animals: 87M one day old male chicks killed; 202,000 male goats not brought to value in NL, DE, NW-FR (2015).
