HELIX – High-End cLimate Impacts and eXtremes
Project Overview
The HELIX programme aims to clarify the future climate through scientific sources and a study of different climate events. 8 scenarios are made by the project in order to be able to anticipate future possibilities and reduce the number of possibilities. In addition, 3 zones are more detailed within the project: Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Europe.
Project Results
The project developed physical scenarios based on temperature increases of 1 to 6°. They were inspired by the Paris Agreement and the expectations of the various stakeholders in the territories.
Scientists therefore tried to find out how environments and hazards change with temperature. During the project, the scientists observed a need to focus on floods, as this phenomenon is strongly increased with the rise in temperatures. “If global temperatures rise by 4°C, the risk of flooding in countries representing more than 70% of the world’s population and PIB could increase by more than 500%. “
The result is essentially a global assessment of the economic costs and populations affected by river flooding under different global warming scenarios.
