MEDIATION – Supporting climate change adaptation planning and policy
Project Overview
MEDIATION is an FP 7 project, with the ultimate goal to develop an integrated methodology to support policy making in the field of climate change adaptation. It will provide decision makers with a set of tools and metrics that can be used to meet the field’s many challenges. As there is no single way of making policy on adaptation, the MEDIATION project will develop guidance on several methods and offer a number of options based on different cases. Methods can be selected according to the policy decision context, the available data, the conditions of applicability, and the objectives of the users. Representative case studies from around Europe will serve as the basis for assessment of knowledge needs regarding climate impact and adaptation policy developments at various levels of governmentand other stakeholders.
Project Results
One of the output of the prohect is a MEDIATION Adaptation Platform that should help to specify the tasks that have to be performed to address climate hazards effectively. It provides access to a Toolbox with methods and tools that are suitable to inform decision-making, dependent on the situation. The interactive platform includes the Adaptation Pathfinder that enables users to find the most appropriate methods and tools for their adaptation questions; the MEDIATION Toolbox that provides detailed information about some 40 methods and tools with conditions for their applicability; and the Case study search tool. The platform is intended to be used by experts with basic technical or scientific knowledge and skills, who engage in policy advise, policy analysis, or other research aiming at supporting climate change adaptation decision making. The MEDIATION framework was based on the results of 11 case studies reflecting different regions, climatic risks and institutional contexts. Developed for four distinct regions of Europe, as well as the EU as a whole, case studies covered topics such as forest fires, agriculture and water resources, livestock, sea-level rise and flooding risk. Countries included Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Serbia and Spain. However, the access to the platform seems to be forbidden.
