ZOOB – Reducing Pollution and Preserving Biodiversity in Agriculture, Accentuate on Olive-Growing
Project Overview
Specific objectives of the project were: the preparation of guidelines for sustainable technologies for integrated and organic cultivation of olives in the border area, which will reduce the risk in the production and the impact on the environment; to reduce the effects of climate changes and the risks of extreme weather events and erosion, while maintaining a permanent soil fertility by introducing appropriate measures; the introduction of useful plants in the olive groves, which will, due to the increased presence of predators reduce the risk of breeding pests, and identify beneficial organisms; exchange of expert knowledge and joint action of experts on olive growing and nature protection in the border area; education of experts and the transfer of good practices from other Mediterranean areas of olive cultivation; training farmers in lectures, workshops, visits to best practices in cross-border area; increasing user awareness about the quality of olive oil through education and tasting; the establishment of cross-border networks among institutions which are operating in the field of agriculture, rural development and nature protection; to raise awareness of all target groups of the importance of biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and cultural landscape; and to introduce uniform practices for monitoring of the by-products of olive growing, the transfer of information and good management practices with olives between countries.
Project Results
The whole area on both sides of border has common problems about environmental protection and biodiversity preserving in agriculture. With the recommendations for an integrated ecological production of olive oil, in conformity with nature, there will be a reduction in environmental pollution in the crossboarder area.
2 workshops for experts;
33 educations for food manufacturers and local population;
1 interdisciplinary way of working with professional duties, harmonization of opinions and making professional recommendations;
30 trained experts;
400 trained olive growers;
- 000 copies of trilingual professional materials with recommendations.
