SpitFire – Spanish-Portuguese Meteorological information system for trans-boundary operations in forest fires
Project Overview
SpitFire addressed several issues aiming at the progress of the efficiency of actions of prevention, preparedness and response to wildfires in transboundary areas. The main objective of this project was the improvement of information exchange on meteorology and forest fire risk in the border area between Portugal and Spain through the identification, design and implementation of data interchange protocols and the development of a cross-border service on weather and fire-risk forecast (SPITFIRE platform). Besides the immediate positive effects of SPITFIRE for Portugal and Spain, this approach could be replicated to other cross border regions in Europe prone to wildfires.
Project Results
1) Protocols for meteorological and fire risk information exchange between Portugal and Spain
2) Web decision support tool and a mobile device application for operations in transboundary wildfire events between Portugal and Spain – versions in Pt, Sp and Eng
3) Manual of operations (Pt, Sp and Eng) and training of hundreds of firefighters and other PPDR agents frequently acting in the transboundary area between Pt and Sp.
